ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO 5 (ARC3117 / ARC3118 )

Module Synopsis

Architecture Design Studio 5 focuses on the theme of place-making for the urban street. It aims to explore and provide appropriate architectural solutions in designing a market-place for the city’s inhabitants. Students will begin by conducting preliminary studies in that introduces them to the studies and context of urbanity through the analysis and documentation of the current urban condition of a selected inner-city site. This will be done in concurrence with the research of urban infill and market-place precedents, and their architectural responses. By the end of the module, students will have developed an appropriate scheme for an urban contemporary marketplace within a dense inner-city street environment that takes into consideration an understanding of applicable current legislations, building technologies and cultural imperatives of the site and its surroundings.

Project 1: Preliminary Studies

Introduction

The Preliminary Studies is a preparatory assignment that focuses on investigating basic notions of the city, and learning from examples of urban infill market-places around the world. This assignment aims to firstly introduce students to the basics in urban design and its relation to architecture, and

secondly, studying and determining the programmatic function, societal role and spatial layout of a market-place and architectural responses for urban infills.

The Preliminary Studies comprises of three components: Site Documentation, Site Analysis, and Precedent Studies of Urban Infills and Market-Places. The Site Documentation and Site Analysis will equip students with a firm understanding of the site they will be working with this semester, while the

Precedent Studies will provide an insight into architectural responses for designing an urban infill contemporary market-place.

The outcome of the Preliminary Studies will include the production of site documentation materials (drawings and models in both digital and physical copy for further use), a comprehensive analysis of the site, and a detailed case study of a relevant urban infill and market-place.

Objectives of Project

The objectives of this assignment are as follows:

  • To have an overview of the formation of cities and introduce basic concepts of urban design in relationto architectural design

  • To introduce and implement basic methodologies of urban studies

  • To investigate the role of market-places in traditional and contemporary urban societies

  • To examine various examples and architectural responses for urban infills

The site chosen is Site B. Site B is a unique site at it is curve and angled in every single angle you possibly wont even imagine it. Our site is special that makes our site analysis more special. Our group did something that is way extraordinary than a typical micro and macro analysis. What we did was "what is so special about Chow Kit" analysis. By doing that, it is the other way of learning site analysis and doing it to another new level of perspective.

Learning Outcomes of this Project

  1. Conduct case studies and site analysis to generate an understanding of the physical and cultural context and development of urban environments

  2. Determine and describe the role of a market-place in a contemporary urban setting

  3. Examine and establish appropriate architectural responses and strategies for designing within an urban infill site

  4. Produce necessary documentation (diagrams, mappings, photographic images, orthographic drawings and models) to record and communicate site analysis findings, and for further use in the coming design stages.

Final Project

Introduction

After the site analysis and precedent studies, students will concentrate on designing a contemporary market-place within an urban infill site. The design of the building is to consist of appropriate architectural responses that address the aspects of the urban street context and user behavioural patterns as discerned and analysed in the Preliminary Studies.

Apart from developing an appropriate formal and elevational strategy in response to the character of the street, the design should take into consideration a holistic application of structural, spatial, functional and environmental requirements to address the user needs for an urban market-place. The design development of this project will include an introduction to the legislative restrictions that impact an architectural scheme, the integration of lighting and acoustic design, as well as the design exploration and detailing of the façade and building envelopes that is coherent with the architectural language of the overall design project.

Tasks - Methodology

Project Requirements and Design Stages, Objectives and Outcomes

The scheme for a contemporary urban market-place should strictly span a total floor area of between 1000m2 -1200m2 , and comprise between 3-5 storeys only within its infill lot.

Sufficient floor area must be allocated for the design of a public realm, circulation and ancillary functions (i.e. loading/unloading bays, ingress and egress, refuse circulation, collection and storage) that is required for a market-place of this scale and type.

Following are the space allocation within the proposal

Retail Space                           60%

Urban Realm                          20%

Services and circulation         20%

Learning Outcomes  of this Project

  • Produce a design outcome for an urban contemporary market-place is site-specific through its formal, cultural, legislative, structural and environmental design responses

  • Apply basic knowledge of urban architectural typologies, infill design strategies and market-place programming

  • Demonstrate fundamental knowledge and awareness of design codes and regulations

  • Design within the constraints of feasibility and in response to basic design codes and statutory requirements

  • Utilise study models, diagramming, mapping, orthographic plan-section and elevational studies to explore and resolve relevant spatial, structural, functional and environmental issues in the design development phase

  • Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), models and presentations to verbally and visually communicate architectural ideas and scheme.
