Building Science 1

This module is an introduction to the factors that affect the thermal performance of buildings.

Its aim is to facilitate us to create acceptable designs which are sustainable (minimizing the use of mechanical cooling systems) and comfortable.

The emphasis is on creating acceptable indoor thermal conditions thus minimizing the use of space heating and cooling.

We were introduced to MS1525 which provides guidelines to creating a more sustainable design in Malaysia.

Project 1 : Human Perception of Comfort Level

In this first assignment, we were asked to monitor the temperature in a room for 3 days. We placed the data logger 1 metres above the ground in the middle of the room. The room we chose is a computer room which is situated on the 26th floor of Setiawalk, Puchong. We produced a measured drawing (scale 1:100) of the room within the building, showing all the featureswhich you believe effect thermal conditions in the room. After obtaining the data, we analyzed the monitored temperatures, looking at the effects of solar radiation, thermal mass, insulation, and ventilation and record all in the report.

From this project, we were able to identify and define the principles of heat transfer in relation to building and people and understand the definition of thermal comfort and discuss factors relating to thermal comfort. Furthermore, analyzing the effect of thermal comfort factors in a person and in a space.

Project 2 : Integration with design studio 3

From this second assignment which is intergrated with the design studio final project, I learned to understand the thermal comfort properties and solve design problems in relation to sustainability issues. I made a rough estimaion heat gain in a space and provide passive solutions for it.
From my design, I am able to evaluate control of variables such as heat and ventilation and Judge the limits of acceptable or desirable conditions (thermal environment) and recommend designs that control the effects of sun on the thermal performance of buildings by using shading devices.
